How to Measure and Calculate Luminaria Quantities

When it comes to creating a magical ambiance for your outdoor or indoor space, luminarias are a fantastic choice. These decorative lanterns can add a warm and inviting glow to any event or gathering. But how do you ensure you have enough luminarias to cover the desired area? Let's dive into the process of measuring and calculating luminaria quantities.

What is the Linear Distance?

The first step in determining the number of luminarias you need is to measure the linear distance where you plan to place them. Whether it's along your lawn, rooftop, or event space, this measurement will help you determine the spacing between each lantern.

Calculating the Number of Luminarias

Once you have the linear distance, you can calculate the number of luminarias needed based on the spacing you prefer. For example, if you want to space the lanterns 3 feet apart, you would divide the total linear distance by 3 to determine how many luminarias you need. For most applications, a 3 foot separation space looks best.  Our light strings come with 3 foot spacing between sockets. Even though our 12-socket light strings (Set of 12 luminarias) appear to cover 36 feet (12 luminarias X 3 feet between them), they actually cover 34 feet because some of the light string goes up in each luminaria while installing.  On the 6-socket light strings (Set of 6 luminarias), the cord distance is 18 feet, but when in use, the distance it will cover is only 17 feet.  This may seem trivial, but will be important if you are calculating long distances.  Light strings can be purchased separately, or together in luminary kits.

Consider the Area to Be Covered

It's also important to consider the area you want to cover with luminarias. If you have a larger space, you may need more lanterns to create a cohesive look. Take into account the size of the area and the desired lighting effect when calculating the quantity of luminarias.

Account for Variations in Spacing

3 foot spacing between luminarias is a general guide.  Use your own taste to decide the distance, however, to go a longer distance than 3 feet, if you plan to use a light string, you will have to buy bare wire and add the sockets to the wire at the distance your desire. If you select LED tea lights for your light source, you are not tethered by a light string and can space your luminarias whatever distance you like.

Finalize Your Order

Once you have determined the linear distance, calculated the number of luminarias needed, and accounted for any variations in spacing, you are ready to finalize your order.  We sell our sets in 12s and 6s, because our light strings are off-the-shelf in 12-socket and 6-sockets.  If you want to go more custom, you can buy custom cut light string and determine your own light string lengths.  Our 12 and 6 socket strings have a male plug on one end and female plug on the other end to accommodate going end-to-end to create the length you need. For example, a Set of 12 and a Set of 6, combined, can cover a length of 51 total feet (34 feet + 17 feet). If your distance to cover is just near this amount, you can make it work.  If you want to block off a light socket or two to shorten your string, we sell socket caps that close those sockets safely.

By following these steps to measure and calculate luminaria quantities, you can create a stunning display that will impress your guests and enhance the ambiance of your outdoor space. Whether you are hosting a special event or simply want to add a touch of elegance to your backyard, luminarias are a versatile and beautiful lighting option.
